Oculus Rift provides DCA with an exciting new virtual reality platform

Virtual reality modelling techniques have been around for decades, but recent efforts by Oculus, Sony, Samsung and others have taken great strides forward in advancing the underlying hardware and software.
DCA’s acquisition of an Oculus Rift DK2 will allow us to complement our existing prototyping methods with a fast and immersive method for interrogating design work. The system will be of immediate benefit in our transportation work, assisting with the visualisation of rail and airline interiors as well as in cab environments where an accurate assessment of the spatial layout is critical. However, the technology will also be applicable to any project where we want to experience and interact with 3D data, at any stage of the development cycle.
The latest Oculus Development Kit features improved positional accuracy, lower latency and a low persistence display to help eliminate motion blur and judder, two of the biggest contributors to simulation sickness. The platform can also be extended with the Leap Motion controller to add a further level of interaction and in the coming months DCA’s electronics and interaction teams will be keenly exploring the additional possibilities the platform can offer our clients.
